HOW WE TELL STORIES IN CAMWORKX.
Welcome to the Camworkx blog.
There are a lot of cameras out there.
There are RED cameras, SONY cameras, cinema lenses, drones, GoPros, gimbals, lights, microphones, and enough accessories to fill an entire gear room.
We've spent years learning how to use all of them.
But we've also learned something that is much more important:
The camera isn't what makes the story.
The story does.
At Camworkx, our goal has never been to simply create something that looks cool. We want to create something that makes you feel something.
Whether we're following a motocross racer, documenting a business, filming a race weekend, or spending an entire day with someone we've never met before, we're always looking for the same thing:
What is the story?
START WITH THE PERSON
Some of our favorite moments aren't the biggest moments.
They're the moments in between.
A rider sitting alone before a race.
A dad talking about why he spends every weekend at the track with his kids.
Someone struggling with a project and figuring out how to get it done.
A business owner explaining why they started their company.
Those moments aren't always planned.
That's why we like to stay close to the people we're filming.
We put a microphone on them. We let the camera roll. We ask questions. And sometimes we just get out of the way.
That's where the real story usually starts.
WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO JUST WATCH IT
We want them to feel like they're there.
That's one of the biggest things we think about when we're shooting.
What did the room sound like?
What was happening before the interview?
What happened immediately after?
What does the person look like when nobody is asking them a question?
Those details are what make a documentary feel real.
A clean interview can tell you what happened.
The footage around it can show you what it felt like.
THE GEAR IS IMPORTANT. BUT IT'S NOT THE STORY.
We love cameras.
We love testing new gear, trying different lenses, building camera rigs, flying drones, shooting GoPro footage, and figuring out how to get a shot that we've never gotten before.
Our production setup has grown a lot over the years.
But we've learned not to let the gear dictate the story.
Sometimes the best camera is the one you already have in your hands.
Sometimes it's a RED on a cinema lens.
Sometimes it's a GoPro mounted to a bike.
Sometimes it's a drone 400 feet above the track.
And sometimes it's just a camera sitting across the room while someone tells you something important.
The right gear is whatever helps tell the story.
WHY WE LOVE DOCUMENTARIES
Documentary filmmaking is probably the biggest reason Camworkx exists.
We like real people.
REAL places.
REAL problems.
REAL competition.
REAL emotion.
There's something about showing up somewhere with a camera and not knowing exactly what the day is going to become.
That's what makes it exciting.
Our MOTO DADS series is a perfect example.
We aren't just trying to film motocross.
We're interested in the people behind it.
The parents.
The riders.
The sacrifices.
The early mornings.
The long drives.
The wins.
The losses.
The moments nobody sees when the race is over.
That's where we find the story.
THE ULTIMATE RIDER
One of the biggest projects we've taken on was The Ultimate Rider.
It started with an idea and a small production team.
We followed 16 riders competing for an opportunity to earn a factory ride with SLR Honda.
But the show wasn't just about who was fastest.
Every rider had a different background, personality, motivation, and reason for being there.
That gave us something much more interesting than just racing footage.
We had a story.
And that's what we try to bring into every project we work on.
WHAT WE'VE LEARNED
After years of shooting, one thing continues to become more obvious:
You can have the best camera in the world and still make a boring film.
You can have a $50,000 camera package and miss the moment.
You can shoot everything in perfect lighting and still have nothing meaningful to say.
But give us an interesting person, a real story, and a reason to care...
We'll figure out the rest.
That's what Camworkx is about.
We're not just here to shoot.
We're here to find the story.
WHAT'S NEXT?
This blog is going to be where we share what happens behind the camera.
We'll be talking about:
CAMERA GEAR
What we're shooting with, why we use it, and what actually matters.
CAMERA TIPS
Things we've learned from shooting real productions, not just sitting in a studio.
STORYTELLING
How we approach interviews, documentaries, and finding the moments that make a story work.
BEHIND THE SCENES
What actually happens when we're on set, at the track, or traveling for a production.
MOTO DADS
Stories, production BTS, and lessons from building the series.
DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING
How we approach real people, real stories, and unpredictable situations.
THE GEAR WE USE
RED, Sony, GoPro, drones, lenses, lighting, audio, and everything else that goes into a Camworkx production.
We're going to share the stuff we wish someone had shown us when we were starting out.
Let's make something worth watching.
